Abstract Considering the fact that different types of failure could induce different structure damage, such a principle for structure design against earthquake has been widely received, that is, structure should be un-damaged under minor earthquake, repairable under moderate earthquake and un-collapsed under large earthquake. On the background of the design principle, this paper presents an optimum design method based on demand of different functions and reliability analysis. Through a numerical example, it is shown that with the help of the method, the aseismic capability of structural system can be reasonably improved and its failure loss under earthquake can be also reduced.
